Electronic Engineers are responsible for the foundation of our illumination Systems strategic vision, leading teams, innovative solution design, and product lifecycle management, which shape corporate and personal financial success. This specific role provides exposure to fundamentals of Acuity Engineering, Optics, Supply Chain, Finance, Product Management, and Product Marketing teams which support your career growth opportunities.

How you will contribute:

This role is responsible for new product development, design, cost reductions, field quality resolution, Acuity Brands manufacturing support and sustaining engineering activities related to Light Engines and Electronics. Works in an electronics and electrical design environment to do overall product design, redesign and cost reductions related to Light Engines, PCB layout, PCBA drawing creation, driver selection, surge protection devices, and luminaire electronic controls. Works on prototyping, testing, and assembling prototypes/samples required for evaluating designs and cost reductions. This engineer will manage many projects simultaneously to support electro-mechanical design/development projects, attend team meetings, collaborates cross functionally in the Acuity matrix to achieve the Customer Experience Matrix. In everything this engineer does, both in projects and daily tasks, LEAN Process methodology is applied to create impact, streamline, and improve processes.

 

Key Responsibilities:

  • Involved in various aspects of the design process including, but not limited to, selecting LED, drivers, and controls to provide integrated Light Engine solution. Calculate electronics parameters for LED schematic configurations while working with the Optics team to provide for correct number of lumens and light distribution. Design work varies from new product development to product enhancements and cost reduction activities. Develops and distributes engineering data in the form of Engineering Change Notices, bills of material and parts tracking and all necessary product deliverables for product release (35%)
  • Interacts with the manufacturing facilities to resolve part or assembly issues, deviation requests, testing requirements, and bill of material errors (15%)
  • Contributes to the product delivery system (PDS stage gate product development) for each major product. This helps to project manage required deliverables for each team member (10%)
  • Initiates and assists with the development of concepts for new products from project charters and specification matrix provided by the Product Manager and other avenues such as reviewing competitor's samples and documentation, and free design techniques related to Light Engine design. These concepts must be agreeable with standard manufacturing methods utilized in the appropriate manufacturing facility (15%)
  • Assist the team with any/all process improvement activities and related research. Develop and continuously improve Light Engine processes, testing, and other documentation. Lead, develop, and participate in Kaizen activities (10%)
  • Submits test requests and interacts with the testing group, as necessary. Submits prototyping requests and interacts with the model shop to produce prototypes and assembly of samples. Reviews functional specifications, project charters and competitors’ samples (15%)

Qualified Applicants will have:

  • Minimum of a bachelor’s degree in Engineering, or a related discipline; Electrical Engineering focus preferred
  • Two years of applicable experience required; experience with designing electronics preferred
  • Possesses working knowledge of Electronics manufacturing, Electronic and Electrical Engineering fundamentals and lighting physics including LEDs
  • Proficient use of PCB layout tools, CAD, Microsoft Office programs, etc.
  • Possess some understanding of manufacturing methods such as stamping, drawing, casting, extruding of metals and plastics
  • Understanding of LEAN & Six Sigma methodology and practices such as standard work, time study, cause & effect and problem-solving tools
  • Ability to communicate verbally, in written form and through sketches, and engineering drawings. Works well in cross-functional team environments
  • Ability to travel up to 20% of the time, as needed
