About Our Location

We invite you to join our team as an Area Leader in one of our largest Distribution Centers located in Des Plaines, Illinois. This high-performing team is based in a recently renovated Manufacturing and Distribution Facility, which houses state of the art equipment and facilities. Job Summary

Acuity Brands is seeking a highly motivated Distribution Area Leader, a salaried supervisory position, with experience driving improvement in a manufacturing or distribution environment. Responsibilities include:

  • Supervising 8-20 hourly employees in a distribution (shipping and or receiving) environment.
  • Drives safety, quality and productivity performance in accordance with lean principles, standard work and customer requirements.
  • Determines daily manpower and work assignments for employees to adjust for fluctuations in demand.
  • Approves payroll, administers corrective action and discipline as needed.
  • May be scheduled on shifts and weekends without additional management support.
  • Ability to travel overnight up to 5% may be required.


Key Tasks and Responsibilities

  • Lead employees in a shipping and or receiving team for finished goods
  • Drive KPIs, +QDIP and continuous improvement, and conduct root cause counter measure for misses in cycle time
  • Train employees in Lean principles
  • Ensure compliance with appropriate safety and quality standards and requirements
  • Manage employee payroll, schedules employees and assigns overtime
  • Hold employees accountable to all plant rules, safety, quality and productivity standards and administer counseling and discipline as necessary
  • Administer collective bargaining agreement and subsequent discipline
Required Experience and Knowledge
  • 3 to 5 years in manufacturing or distribution environment, preferably high volume
  • 1 to 3 years proven supervisory experience
  • Logistical knowledge (loading and unloading of trailers and / or containers)
  • Understanding of transportation documentation is preferred (bills of lading, commercial invoices, freight bills, etc.)
  • Experience with Lean principles and exposure to continuous improvement and Kaizen events preferred
  • Experience training adults in technical topics as well as problem solving, communication and conflict resolution
  • High degree of comfort with computer usage including Microsoft Office Suite, with strong knowledge of Excel.  Familiarity with Oracle is helpful.
  • Ability to read, write and speak English is required
  • Bi-lingual language skills (English / Spanish) is preferred

Required Education

  • High School diploma or equivalent is required
  • Bachelors’ Degree is preferred

Physical Requirements

  • Must be able to stand 10-12 hours per day
  • Lift, push, pull up to 40 pounds frequently
  • Must be able to see, hear and comprehend in a noisy, environment.
  • Must be able to tolerate temperature ranges of 40 - 90 degrees F.

Working Hours

  • The Distribution Center is operational seven days a week from 6:00AM until 12:00AM.  We currently have openings for all available shifts.
  • You may be assigned to work off shifts and/or weekend hours.
  • Also, you may be asked to cover alternating schedules, when needed to cover vacations and / or other business needs arise.
