About this Team

As a part of the Architectural new product design enginering team you will participate in a number of efforts aimed at expanding our leadership position in the ambient lighting space by developing products which delight our customers by integrating the latest technologies in the areas of mechanical, electrical, optical, controls and IoT.  

As a part of this team you will have exposure to a number of core products within Acuity's portfolio and collaborate with all cross-functional members of the design team.

Our Design Engineers work within the Acuity Brands' Product Development System (PDS) to drive projects to closure in a timely manner, according to established schedules. 

This position is responsible for new product development and design and sustaining engineering for existing product, which may involve resolution of field problems.  You will work in an electro-mechanical environment to do overall product design and redesign, part assembly and detailed part drawings. You will also work on prototyping, testing, and assembling prototypes and samples.  You will attend various Product Design/development project meetings and collaborate with all cross-functional members of the design team.

How you will contribute:
  • Leads various aspects of the design process including, but not limited to, the development of part geometry, assembly design and drawing generation. Design work varies from new product development to product enhancements and cost reduction activities. Develops and distributes engineering data in the form of Engineering Change Notices, bills of material and parts tracking.
  • Partners with the manufacturing facilities to resolve part or assembly issues, deviation requests and bill of material errors in an effort to keep the manufacturing lines running and ensure quality product is produced.  Conducts pilot/pre-production runs.  
  • Actively participates in, or lead on occasion, team meetings using the product delivery system (stage gate product development) for each major product.
  • Initiates and develops concepts for new products from Project Charters, and Specification Matrix provided by the Product Manager and other avenues such as reviewing competitor's samples and documentation, and free design techniques. Ensures concepts are agreeable with standard manufacturing methods utilized in the appropriate manufacturing facility.
  • Continuously looks to improve processes related to productivity, quality, purchasing and manufacturing; to include sourcing new or alternate processes, equipment, and/or training of manpower. Looks for advancements or changes in technology via tradeshows, technology councils, vendors or other methods.
  • Support ABS/Lean Transformation by actively participating on Kaizen teams and completing of post Kaizen activity.  May lead aspects of the Kaizen as necessary.  
  • Submits test requests and actively engages with the testing group as necessary on any required follow-up. Submits prototyping requests and works directly with the model shop for the production of prototypes and assembly of samples. Reviews functional specifications, project charters and competitors samples.
Qualified Applicants will have:
  • Knowledge of engineering fundamentals
  • Proficient use of 3D CAD, MS Office, etc.
  • Proficient in LEAN & Six Sigma methodology and practices such as standard work, time study, cause & effect, 5WHY analysis and other tools of DMAIC.
  • The ability to communicate verbally, in written form and through sketches, and engineering drawings.
  • Works well in cross-functional team environments.
  • Possess understanding of manufacturing methods such as stamping, drawing, casting, extruding of metals and plastics. 
  • Leadership, to influence and enlist the cooperation of other team members to work towards the goal of completing and implementing new product development on time, and in budget.
  • Knowledge of UL and UL testing processes very helpful. Understand and adhere to the appropriate established industry and safety Standards.
  • Mechanical Engineering degree
  • 3 - 5+ years directly related experience
