How you will contribute:

The position for Design Engineer will work within the Acuity Brands' Product Development System (PDS) to drive projects to closure in a timely manner, according to established schedules. This position is responsible for new product development and design and sustaining engineering for existing product, which may involve resolution of field problems. Works in an electro-mechanical environment to do overall product design and redesign, part assembly and detailed part drawings. Works on prototyping, testing, and assembling prototypes and samples. Attends various Product Design/development projects, and must be able to collaborate with all cross functional members of the design team.


Key Responsibilities:

  • Involved in various aspects of the design process including, but not limited to, the development of part geometry, assembly design and drawing generation. Design work varies from new product development to product enhancements, cost reduction and sustaining activities. Develops and distributes engineering data in the form of engineering change notices, bills of material and parts tracking.
  • Interacts with Contract and Acuity Brands manufacturing facilities to resolve part or assembly issues, deviation requests and bill of material errors
  • Attends team meetings using the product delivery system (phase gate product development) for each major product
  • Initiates and assists with the development of concepts for new products from project charters, and specification matrix provided by the Product Manager and other functions such as reviewing competitor's samples and documentation. These concepts must be agreeable with standard manufacturing methods utilized in the appropriate manufacturing facility
  • Assist the team with any/all process improvement activities and related research
  • Supports ABS/Lean Transformation as a Kaizen team participant and assist with the completion of post-Kaizen activity/assignments as appropriate
  • Submits test requests and interacts with the testing group as necessary. Submits prototyping requests and interacts with the model shop for the production of prototypes and assembly of samples. Reviews functional specifications, project charters and competitors samples

Qualified Applicants will have:

  • Minimum of a bachelor’s degree in Engineering, Mechatronics, or a related discipline. Electrical experience preferred
  • Two years of new product design in which the candidate was responsible for all aspects of product design and testing, and collaborated with product and marketing teams on launch deliverables
  • Proficient understanding of engineering fundamentals including comprehension and application of standards, developing test plans and interpreting results. Data mining and reusing knowledge to minimize rework
  • Proficient use of 3D CAD with emphasis on SolidWorks, Microsoft Office, etc. Familiarity with Oracle, PowerBi, Essbase and how those data sources are used to gather and interpret data
  • Prior experience composing and presenting quality reports including Root Cause and Countermeasures and A3.  Also, Design and Process FMEA using functional requirements tables to drive product requirements and quality
  • Understanding of manufacturing methods such as roll forming, diecasting, aluminum extruding, injection molding, metal bending and stamping – both hard tooled and soft tooled methods
  • Basic understanding of electricity and circuit control such as luminaire dimming and switching
  • Ability to communicate verbally, in written form and through sketches, and engineering drawings. Works well in cross-functional team environments
  • Experience collaborating with Asian suppliers is preferred
  • Ability to travel approximately 5% of the time
  • Physical ability to lift up to 25 lbs
