Position Summary & Location

The Design Engineer is responsible for new product development and design and sustaining engineering for existing products and resolving field-related problems. They work in an electro-mechanical environment for overall product design and redesign, part assembly and detailed part drawings. The Design Engineer works on prototyping, testing, and assembling prototypes and samples. They contribute to various Product Design and Development meetings to collaborate with cross functional design team members.

 

This Hybrid position works from Acuity in Decatur, GA.

Primary Responsibilities

 

  • Involved in various aspects of the design process including, but not limited to, the development of part geometry, assembly design and drawing generation. Design work varies from new product development to product enhancements and cost reduction activities. Develops and distributes engineering data in the form of Engineering Change Notices, bills of material and parts tracking.                        
  • Interact with the manufacturing facilities to resolve part or assembly issues, deviation requests and bill of material errors.                 
  • Initiate and assist with the development of concepts for new products from Project Charters, and Specification Matrix provided by the Product Manager and other avenues such as reviewing competitor's samples and documentation, and free design techniques. These concepts must be agreeable with standard manufacturing methods utilized in the appropriate manufacturing facility.                     
  • Submit test requests and interacts with the testing group as necessary. Submits prototyping requests and interacts with the model shop for the production of prototypes and assembly of samples. Reviews functional specifications, project charters and competitors samples.
  • Attend team meetings using the product delivery system (stage gate product development) for each major product.                              
  • Assist the team with any/all process improvement activities and related research.                          
  • Support Better, Smarter, Faster & Lean Transformation efforts as a Kaizen team participant and assist with the completion of post-Kaizen activity/assignments as appropriate.

Qualifications

 

  • A Bachelor’s Degree in Mechanical Engineering and 2+ years of related experience are required.           
  • Possess knowledge of engineering fundamentals. The ability to communicate verbally, in written form and through sketches, and engineering drawings.                                    
  • Proficient use of 3D CAD, MS Office, etc.                                        
  • Learn uses of LEAN & Six Sigma methodology and practices such as standard work, time study, cause & effect, 5WHY analysis and other tools of DMAIC.                                 
  • Work well in cross-functional team environments.                                     
  • Possess some understanding of manufacturing methods such as stamping, drawing, casting, extruding of metals and plastics.      
  • Can travel domestically up to 25% of the time.
