Job Classification:  Remote

We Light the Way!

Acuity Brands (NYSE: AYI) is transforming the lighting industry. We take pride in our 12,000 employees, and they take pride in working with the best in the industry.  Join a team committed to lighting the way to a more brilliant, connected, and productive world.  Individually we are talented, but together we are unstoppable.

About this Team

Acuity Brands is seeking software engineers with SRE/DevOps experience to join its new SRE team in the growing Atrius IoT program. As a member of our team you will bring your passion for building fault tolerant systems and reliable software to help us design, deploy, scale, and maintain highly available distributed sensory networks and companion cloud applications.

Our team’s scope is broad, covering our technology stack from end to end, but our focus is to quantify and improve availability, reliability, and performance of our products and services.  This is done through general product design, technical architecture, and process in close collaboration with product development and customer success teams throughout our organization.

Our teams are highly distributed and remote work is the norm.  Culturally, we place emphasis on trust, respect, asynchronous communication, creativity, and valuing our customer.

How you will contribute:

The SRE role is an opportunity to apply your unique combination of technical system design and software engineering skills to novel reliability problems facing our products and services.  While doing so you will work with a broad array of technology and business experts to leave a lasting impact on our customer’s sustainability, building operations, and business intelligence initiatives.

Your Responsibilities

Atrius SREs are broadly challenged to ensure managed deployments of the Atrius sensory network and cloud applications are ‘up’, operating reliably, and have room to grow.  To do so you will work with a variety of engineering teams and, collectively, define a means of characterizing, measuring, and monitoring end to end service operations.  Using such data as a guide, you will perform proactive service maintenance and problem diagnosis, along with guiding and aiding in problem remediation.  Additionally, you will both participate and lead in reactive incident management events and assist in performing postmortems.  Furthermore, through collaboration with other engineering teams, you will ensure new product development efforts are properly designed to be observable, available, maintainable, and scalable.

Throughout these efforts you will also apply critical thinking and creative problem solving to build and iterate on new monitoring and automation tools to help us continue delivering an outstanding customer experience.

Qualified Applicants will have:

  • Bachelor's degree
  • A system operations mindset, with emphasis on keeping things ‘up’.  This means defining required performance and expected load, monitoring operation, and taking action to address disruptions.
  • Work laterally with other engineering teams to characterize and track problems, identify root causes, and collaborate to address them.
  • Understanding of service delivery principals, particularly incident and problem management.  Ability to both participate and lead incident resolution efforts and subsequent postmortems.
  • 5+ years as a software engineer using C#, Java, Python, C++, or Go.
  • Strong written communication skills.
  • A passion for solving complex problems, identifying root causes, and for leaving things in a better place than you found it.

Preferred qualifications:

  • Incident response and / or general incident management experience.
  • Experience with highly available distributed systems at scale.
  • Experience working with IoT networks.
  • Experience negotiating and defining SLAs, SLOs, and SLIs in collaboration with product owners.
  • Experience deploying or operating solutions on Microsoft Azure cloud platform.
