About this Team

Acuity Brands is seeking engineers with IoT and edge technology and services experience to join its IoT Solution Architecture and deployment team in the growing Atrius IoT program. As a member of the team you will bring your passion for building fault tolerant and reliable systems to help us design, deploy, scale, and maintain highly available distributed sensory networks and companion cloud applications. 

 Our team’s scope is broad, covering our technology stack from end to end, but our focus is to quantify and improve availability, reliability, agility, and performance of our products and services.  This is done through contribution to general product design, technical architecture, and process in close collaboration and open communication across functional boundaries throughout our organization.

How you will contribute:

The IoT Engineer role is an opportunity to apply your unique combination of technical and engineering skills to manage a fleet of edge devices with complex topology that power the Atrius products and services.  While doing so you will work with a broad array of technology and business experts to leave a lasting impact on our customer’s sustainability, building operations, and business intelligence initiatives.

Your Responsibilities:

  • Design IoT solutions for enterprise-wide deployments including deployment and serviceability automation
  • Monitor and manage the availability and performance of the edge and gateway devices that power the Atrius IoT platform.
  • Partner with engineering and support teams to validate, troubleshoot specific and widespread Enterprise IoT network issues
  • Act as escalation point for critical service issues. Lead and participate in sustainable incident response and blameless post-mortems.
  • Support proactive service maintenance and problem diagnosis, along with guiding and aiding in problem remediation.
  • Actively engage with product, QA, and field support teams to improve observability and reliability.
  • Drive continuous improvement by identify and kickstarting initiatives that improve stability and availability.

 

Qualified Applicants will have:

  • 3+ years of experience with smart industrial / IoT technologies and services.
  • Experience in software development and /or scripting.
  • Functional understanding of IoT data sets as created by array of wirelessly networked sensors
  • Understanding of security appliances, compliance requirements and best practices as they relate to edge security, IoT security implications, and cloud-based web applications security.
  • Knowledge of fundamental RF networks, components.
  • Experience in device life cycle management.
  • Understanding of communication protocols between devices and cloud – HTTPS, MQTT, AMQP, TCP.
  • Ability to work laterally with other teams to characterize and track issues, troubleshoot, and identify root causes, and collaborate to address them.
  • Ability to participate and lead broad based problem management effort.
  • Strong verbal and written communication skills.
  • Ability to learn on the job and explore new technologies with little supervision.
  • A passion for solving complex problems, identifying root causes, and for leaving things in a better place than you found it.

 

Preferred qualifications:

  • Experience monitoring and operating large scale and complex topology of IoT devices.
  • Experience with cloud, containerization, and orchestration.
  • Familiarity with embedded firmware design, preferably for battery powered devices.
  • Familiarity with data warehouse (Bigquery), analytics and visualization tools (e.g., Pandas, Power BI, Looker etc.)
  • Familiarity with SRE principles and processes.
