Director, Corporate Sustainability and Communications

Acuity’s lighting and building management solutions vary from individual devices to intelligent network systems. With
fiscal year 2018 net sales of $3.7 billion, Acuity Brands has operations throughout North America, and in Europe and
Asia. Individual devices include lighting controls, lighting components, controllers for various building systems (including
HVAC, lighting, shades and access control), power supplies, and prismatic skylights. Among other benefits, intelligent
network systems can optimize energy efficiency and comfort as well as enhance the occupant experience for various
indoor and outdoor applications, all the while reducing operating costs. We continue to expand our solutions portfolio,
including software and services, to provide a host of other economic benefits resulting from data analytics that enables
the “Internet of Things” ("IoT") and supports the advancement of smart buildings, smart cities, and the smart grid.

Responsible for developing and implementing the Acuity Brands Sustainability/Environmental, Social and Governance (EarthLIGHT) strategy.  Reports to Senior Vice President, General Counsel with dotted line reporting to the Marketing team.  Works with senior leadership and key stakeholders to develop and execute on priorities, organize and track actions, and communicate progress related to initiatives that have environmental, social (including community activities and associate health and wellbeing), and governance impacts. Develop appropriate metrics and reporting tools and optimize communication channels for investors, customers, and associates about the EarthLIGHT program. 


Principal Accountabilities:

60% - Build and oversee the firm’s corporate social responsibility/environmental, social and governance strategy.  Work through influence (vs. direct authority) to create and embed processes within key areas of the company to support overall company strategies.  Reinforce the Light the Way culture and brand of Acuity Brands.  Collaborate with senior leadership to develop goals, processes, and metrics to measure and report the company’s performance with respect to the EarthLIGHT program.  Partner with Investor Relations, Marketing, Compliance, and HR teams to increase Associate Engagement and Customer Engagement.  Perform other duties and responsibilities as assigned.


40% Develop and execute a comprehensive sustainability communications plan, including leadership involvement, messaging, digital marketing, media relations, partnerships, philanthropic commitments, speaking platforms, social media and measurement. Serve as company spokesperson on the EarthLIGHT program as needed.  Create an annual Sustainability/ESG report. 


Required Qualifications:

  • Bachelor’s degree, preferably in English, journalism, public relations, marketing communications or related field
  • Meaningful experience in corporate social responsibility/environmental, social, and governance programs a plus
  • 8-plus years communications experience, preferably in large, complex organization(s)
  • Excellent written and oral communications skills - clear, concise, creative and persuasive
  • Strong business acumen
  • Demonstrated experience in internal and external communications and leveraging social media
  • Strong analytical and strategic planning and project management skills. Skilled in moving from analysis to action.
  • Creative and strategic thinker with a demonstrated ability to effectively position a company’s values, positions and products with a wide range of stakeholders
  • Team player with demonstrated success in providing effective team leadership.  Experience in managing project through influence across complex organizations. 
  • Ability to work effectively with employees at all levels of the organization and interact with and have credibility with senior leadership
  • Strong organizational skills to manage multiple, concurrent projects within deadlines
  • Demonstrated ability to adapt and succeed within a fast-paced and dynamic cross-functional environment
